Many accidents at work are caused by falling objects which in turn can lead to significant claims for personal injury compensation. Such accidents may occur in a number of ways:
- Objects dropped or dislodged by individuals working at heights.
- Objects falling from buildings or installations due to lack of maintenance.
- Poorly stored items falling from shelving or other storage units.
- Poorly installed or constructed materials falling due to poor workmanship.
Where work is being undertaken at height, steps should be taken to ensure that objects do not fall and in addition that the area around where the work is being undertaken is cordoned off to prevent access. Anyone working in the immediate vicinity should be provided with appropriate protective equipment. This will normally include a hard hat.
Regular systems of inspection and maintenance should be undertaken on all work places and properties. This is to ensure that items are secure, particularly where pedestrians or workmen will regularly use the area below and where this is an obvious risk of injury.
Adequate storage facilities should always be provided to ensure that items are positioned securely and that there is safe access to items which have been stored. This is to ensure that injury is not sustained whilst attempting to store or remove items or alternatively that other items are not dislodged.
