Who can apply for an International Sportsperson Visa?
If you meet the eligibility criteria and your sport’s governing body endorses your application, affirming that
you are either an elite sportsperson or a qualified coach
you possess international recognition
your employment will significantly advance your sport at the highest level in the UK you can then proceed to apply for an International Sportsperson visa.
How long can I stay in the UK on an International Sportsperson Visa?
You can remain in the UK for up to three years on an International Sportsperson Visa. Provided you remain eligible, you can extend this visa. After five years, you may qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain.
What are the eligibility requirements for an International Sportsperson Visa?
You must have proof of the following:
A valid certificate of sponsorship.
Proficiency in English if your stay exceeds 12 months.
Personal savings to sustain yourself upon arrival in the UK.
Evidence of your travel history from the last five years.
A tuberculosis test result if you are from a country where a tuberculosis text is required before you can come to the UK.
Additionally, your employer is responsible for ensuring your job pays at least the minimum wage and complies with UK regulations concerning working hours. Failure to meet these standards will result in the refusal of your application.
What is a Certificate of Sponsorship
This electronic record contains your personal information and job details. It is not a physical document but an electronic record. Your sponsor will furnish you with a reference number for the certificate of sponsorship, which you will include in your application.
Each certificate of sponsorship reference number is single-use and must be utilized within 3 months of receipt.
How much money do I need to support myself?
You are required to have a minimum of £1,270 in your bank account to demonstrate your ability to support yourself in the UK.
You must maintain this amount in your account for at least 28 consecutive days. Day 28 must fall within 31 days of your visa application.
Proof of this financial requirement is generally necessary, unless either:
You have held a valid UK visa for a minimum of 12 months or
Your employer is willing to cover your expenses for the first month in the UK, up to £1,270.
Your partner and children will also need to display their ability to support themselves while in the UK. Refer to the financial evidence guidance for more details on the necessary funds and how to validate them.
If your employer can provide support: This should be confirmed on your certificate of sponsorship. Your employer must complete the 'sponsor certifies maintenance' section within 'Additional data'.
