If you have accomplished 10 years of uninterrupted and legal residence in the United Kingdom, you are entitled to seek Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). There is also a further 20 years’ route if you have had periods of overstaying or residing in the UK illegally. This is known as making an ILR application based on long residence. The process can be complex, and it's advisable to seek legal advice and assistance to ensure you meet all the necessary requirements and have a strong application.
At Hadi Law Solicitors, our Immigration Lawyers can assist you with obtaining ILR through the private life route. We have positively advised thousands of clients on immigration law matters over the past decade. Our fully qualified Solicitors also understand why UK Visas and Immigration refuse private life based ILR applications and will provide expert advice and assistance aimed at having your refusal overturned so you can achieve your dream of settlement.

Below are some frequent questions regarding the 20 year Private Life route to ILR.
What is the private life route to ILR
Under the 20-year rule, you do not need to have lived in the UK lawfully for two decades but must have resided 'continuously' for a minimum of 20 years.
There are four prerequisites you must satisfy to become eligible for ILR under this route:
Submit an application using the appropriate form, known as the ‘Application to remain in the UK on the basis of family life or private life.’
Ensure a valid application for leave by paying any applicable fees, attending a biometrics appointment, providing a passport or suitable identity document, and being present in the UK on the application date.
Meet the suitability requirements.
Maintain continuous residence in the UK for a minimum of 20 years.
What is continuous residence?
You must provide evidence of a continuous 20-year residency in the UK. You must not have had any absences from the country exceeding six months at a stretch and that the total period spent outside of the UK during your 20-year duration have not exceeded 550 days. Additionally, you must not have been subjected to removal, deportation, or voluntary departure from the UK following an application denial. Furthermore, you should not have left the UK without a "reasonable expectation at the time of departure that they would be lawfully able to return."
